Columbia-Bassett strives to offer experiences of reflection, self-discovery and insight. There exists at Bassett an environment of collaboration, an effort to help people in need, and a sense of mission.  Much can be gained in these respects by consideration of and participation in the arts.

Students will all undertake an artistic endeavor while in Cooperstown.  In the past students rotating at Bassett have enjoyed this element. Past efforts by former college students have been anthologized into the book below. Click here for excerpts (PDF format).

The book was glowingly reviewed in The Annals of Internal Medicine and BMJ with the following exerpt:

Let Me Listen to Your Heart is the apt title of a collection of autobiographical writings-both prose and poetry-by a group of medical students from The Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, New York State. Most of the pieces deal with the experience of young people grappling with a new, and anxious reality: the transition from preclinical to clinical experiences, from studies of cells and organs, to all the ambiguities and complexity of dealing with real patients for the first time-but without the emotional and professional protection of a medical degree.
