Columbia-Bassett strives to offer experiences of reflection, self-discovery and insight. There exists at Bassett an environment of collaboration, an effort to help people in need, and a sense of mission. Much can be gained in these respects by consideration of and participation in the arts.
Students will all undertake an artistic endeavor while in Cooperstown. In the past students rotating at Bassett have enjoyed this element. During the Major Clinical Year, students meet together once a month to discuss themes and issues brought up by experiences of working with patients. Students also organize a monthly “glimmerglass” reflection activity to partake in something that is non-medical and may be unusual, fun, different, and potentially rejuvenating. o Some events have included traversing a ropes course, spending a morning at a local museum, taking a sunset hike in the woods, planting a garden in the backyard of one of the student houses, and making a group pastel painting of a scene at the lake. Past efforts by former students have also been anthologized into a book entitled “Let Me Listen to Your Heart.” Click here for excerpts (PDF format).
